Chris - good idea.
I have past co-worker who does residential design - just lost her job and is starting her own office. I'll forward the FB link to her.
Even if the organization doesn't grow to the extent you might hope - I think creating a place on FB for people involved in residential design to interact is an excellent idea. |

Thanks phansford,
I hope it becomes a viable organization but that will take a lot of work and active participation.
I have been interested for many years in the potential of the internet to bring people together from around the country for a common cause and benefit. For several years I waited for CORA to do it but the leadership there is poor so I finally just jumped in.
My greatest ambition would be to unify architects and residential designers. I am not suggesting RD's should use the title of architect or design large buildings. Only recognize that we are all working in the field of architecture and have common goals. I think the AIA has done architecture a disservice by promoting exclusion rather than inclusion. I don't see my chance of success on this count as being very good but who knows?
I was kind of impressed and inspired by an architect over at the Softplan forum starting a mentorship program on facebook called 'Spline' to teach Softplan. I thought -why can't we do the same thing?
It is looking mighty cold up there DJ -I like that timber with the double tenon. _________________ -Chris Stewart

chris, an effort that seeks to bring people together is a positive thing
especially in this current economic climate and I don't see many
people doing much about it so good luck.
........and dj, a blatant attempt at self-promotion is the only
honest kind of self-promotion and a true American art form.
.....I think it's even stated somewhere in the Constitution.....or was it the Bill of Rights? |

I remember back in the good old days when a young brash timberframer wanted to change the world and joined this forum.
Chris, The facebook links are difficult to post. I edited three times to get mine to work. _________________ An event is to chaos as function is to form. n/a

I'll try it again. -For some reason it is shorter in length than before.

Go figure.
Anyway I don't know if this idea will fly. To be successful it will take a certain amount of people who are bonafede otherwise it might be difficult to set standards. I think the structure would work but other than presenting an opportunity to make the world a bit better it does not really offer anything to the people who are already at the top. _________________ -Chris Stewart

I find it interesting that an architect over at my CAD forum started a mentorship program to teach how to use the software and got several volunteers who where willing to invite new users to their home and teach them for free.
I though -why not do the same for design? Groups like CORA say they want to improve the quality of design but when it comes to actually doing anything their method is always to try and exclude anyone who does not have their same training. (in other words their solution would be to prohibit anyone who is not a registered architect from designing any structure.) I am not against raising standards but that sort of thing does not happen overnight.
I have tried to create many levels which reflect the real world of residential design and attempts to set up a system where people want to move up:
