We just moved into a new home and the fireplace has a flu and it looks like it was converted for an electrical fireplace.

We would like to have either a gas fireplace or a gel fireplace. The stone on the fireplace appears to be granite with a layer of concrete behind it and firestone brick behind that.

Does anyone know if we have to remove the granite and concrete before putting any kind of flame logs in the fireplace?

It is obvious that the granite is meant to be ornamental but granite is stone... if anyone could answer this it would be great. I have been having a hard time getting answers on my own.

Thank you!
