A series of reports from Iran, this week and next, by Elizabeth Farnsworth, on PBS TV's Lehrer News Hour, points to the ways in which, on both sides of an international conflict, the people are led -- by appealing to their patriotic" self-interest" -- to support their ambitious leaders.
Being, as we are, in the middle of war, we gain an intense, renewed view of what that means: who pays for it; who gains by it; what is lost by it.
