If you look half way down the PowerCADD discussion page, you will notice that I asked what beam design programs others in the PC community were using.
The reason I asked the PC community is because if we run PC, we work on Macs. And who best to know? And if others are like me, I don't even go into the rest of the Forum so I would never come across the question.
I checked out the suggestions and ran a Google search and to my knowledge, there is no beam calc. program that runs on OSX.
There is on that runs on OS9 but you also have to have Excel.
I guess the other option would be to use a windows based program www.strucalc.com ($395) and buy Virtual PC for another $200. |

Rod:
MaxBeam, which I mentioned, does require Excel, which most offices already have.
I'm using it on OSX, though MaxBeam does not really care which version of the OS you're using.
What is the value of being able to handle beam sizing on your computer? The cost of the software is nominal compared to that, for most of us.

Hi Rod;
I just spent 15 minutes looking for the original thread because I have the same interest as you. I've posted my views about unnecessary forum moderating before, so I won't ask how it ended up in "Artifice Open 3D CAD Discussion" (I don't want to know).
Anyhow, I contacted Arez Anzel (Compuneering) some time ago. He said he was thinking about upgrading older apps to OSX (SimpleSpan & BackSpan). Maybe if we both bugged him ?
I'll email Arez today.
If you find something, will you let me know at artisan"at"backland.net (typo intentional)
Still haven't seen a reply for where to find MaxBeam.
Thanks in advance,
D. Mousley |

For what it's worth, I've thought about doing this as part of WildTools, but it's not on my short term list of things to do.

How about using PowerCADD as the graphic interface to FrameMac? That would be too good to be true. Just for laughs what if Alfred called Arez Anzel. Instead of Alfred trying to recreat the work that Arez has done already, what if FrameMac could be made into a PowerCADD plug-in.
(BTW, I still have and use FrameMac, though that's not all I use. I have some Excel worksheets I created myself for the simplist cases.)

| Way back about 10 years ago I discovered that Clarisworks spreadsheet cells could be detached and placed anywhere in a page-using the Clarisworks graphic tools (very crude) I could draw beam, retaining walls, etc. and put the input cells where they needed to be (lengths, loads, wall heights, etc) complete with equations, then the spreadsheets did the calculations. I still have not found anything better and still run Clarisworks 1.0 under classic to run these, as the results are calculation sheets that are just as I would write them by hand (very easily understood by plan checkers). If there was a way to create linked spreadsheet cells inside PowerCadd, perhaps in text blocks, this would create a very usefull tool. |

I still use FrameMac, too (and have been since it first was released). I'd love to have an OSX version, especially one that integrates with PowerCadd. (I'd settle for just an OSX version, though -- it is the one remaining Classic application that I still use.) |

Yeah, even the Model Energy Code application that I used to have to use Virtual PC/Windows to run is now an OSX application.
I do run MacEnvelope in Classic now. There's nothing equivalent to that either.
