Central Middlesex NHS Trust have been pioneering new methods of healthcare delivery in the UK – the recently completed Brent Emergency and Diagnostic Centre (BECaD) designed by HLM Architects in association with Avanti Architects, is an experiment in rationalising medical expertise on a single site to meet local community demands. The design, delivered through PFI has involved extensive consultation and a fundamental redesign of patient processes and staff roles. BECaD is being introduced as a prospective ‘Healing City’ – not just looking after the sick but promoting good health. Park Royal Partnership regeneration agency together with the Arts Council of England, have recognised the vital role that BECaD and the arts will play in the regeneration process of what has been an historically deprived community. This is a tremendous opportunity to regenerate a community and improve a ‘way of life’ for the local people who will provide the patient catchment for this Urban Acute Hospital.
Claudia Bloom of Avanti Architects will address the new model of care presented at BECaD. Les Welch of HLM and Candice Hurwitz, Arts Director of Central Middlesex NHS Trust will discuss how the developing arts strategy will be integrated.
