There's Brooklyn..........and then there's Brooklyn Heights!

Just over the Manhattan Bridge, east of Chinatown and Canal Street,
is a gem of an historic enclave known as Brooklyn Heights.
If you're ever in the New York City area, take some time to visit
a part of the city with a unique architectural heritage that has to
be seen to be believed.
Here is a quick look on a recent rainy January afternoon.

Image
There are more than a few converted carriage houses with space for
a yard and some greenery.

Note the carriage door archways converted to windows for
current residential use.

The low rise nature of many of the houses help create the special
open feeling of the neighborhood.

This double entry door is a small sample of many dating back to
the middle of the 19th century.

Architectural ironwork and detailing is in great abundance.

Like Manhattan, public access to the waterfront is an important feature
for all to enjoy.

Image
There are more than a few wood sided clapboard houses that lend a
colonial era feeling to the neighborhood.

An historic firehouse illustrates the pride and heritage of
Engine Company 205 with a mural depicting a view
of the Brooklyn Bridge and NYC skyline.

Image
This converted mansion on Pierrepont Street is reminiscent of the
Guilded Age of railroad and oil barons.

Image
A fine example of American Gothic Revival architecture
probably dating back to the 1850's.

An historic church along one of the main boulevards.

The rain started coming down a little harder so it was time to make our
way out of the city and back home.
I am looking forward to another visit on a sunny day to explore
this very special neighborhood known as Brooklyn Heights. :)
