"The team President-elect Barack Obama introduced on Monday to carry out his energy and environmental policies faces a host of political, economic, diplomatic and scientific challenges that could impede his plans to address global warming and America's growing dependence on dirty and uncertain sources of energy.

"Acknowledging that a succession of presidents and Congresses had failed to make much progress on the issues, Mr. Obama vowed to press ahead despite the faltering economy and suggested that he would invest his political capital in trying to break logjams.

"'This time must be different,' Mr. Obama said at a news conference in Chicago. 'This will be a leading priority of my presidency and a defining test of our time. We cannot accept complacency, nor accept any more broken promises.'"

The equation above will not work, ever!
That is! political decisions are almost exclusive to good practice for any of these three subjects. Just remember most of the planets population are ordinary people that do not have extra money to spend on more expensive cars, more expensive houses or higher taxes to pay for more efficient sustainable infrastructure.
We in Australia have just got a new gov't who have the rock star lead singer (envioronment activist) from Midnight Oil, Peter Garrett. He was our modern enviornmental Bob Dylan, his popularity & spin got him into power & he is our new minister for the enviornment. Do you remember his big hit "Blue Sky Mining" its a great song if you have not heard of it, google it.
Well since he has been in power a year now he has had the biggest sell outs of his career, he has sold out on just about every policy that would be good for the planet he used to sing about in his earlier career.
Basically he has had to tow the party line.
I am afraid that America's new savior Barack Obama will end up doing the same, he will govern on the tight rope of saving the nation from the rack & ruin of the Global Economic Crisis & trying to stay in power! Somewhere down the list his P/R team will try to paint it with as much green wash as possible.
The only way to save the enviornment is to have a section of government that is not poltically aligned, something like a war cabinet set up with scientists, financiers & administraters who do not advise the government but in fact tell them what to do!
I am a political pessimist, the ones with good intentions do not get a chance & most of the rest are egotistical, corrupt whatever other bad human trait you want to use, the crap rises to the top!!!!
