When we quote and sell our shutters we try and stress that shutters are a matter of personal taste. Meaning the design/style, hardware, finsihing and overall operation should be what you like best. Granted, maybe a Philadelphia Federal style shutter will look silly on a New Mexico Pueblo style home...but if it's what you like, go fot it.
As for my opinion, and most of our design team, we prefer when the shutters are diffent than the trim. That does not mean a drastically contrasting color but still, something different. This helps to make the shutters stand out and not blend in with their surroundings. Afterall, good shutters should not only be functional but decorative as well.
I hope this has helped.
