The site linked below gives an exelent example of Japanese homes and details of the construction. Those with a phone modem may have to wait for this to load, but it's worth the wait.
The emphasis on Japanese style construction is that the structural members are also the finished members so great care is taken in the construction of the house because everything can be seen. Note particularly the Japanese joinery.
You may want to do a Google search on the joinery. This is an interesting topic all by itself.
You may find it interesting to compare Japanese houses with Greene & Greene from early 1900's America. Here is a link that shows many other California bungalows including Greene and Greene houses, but has many houses by others.
