Posted by Nicole on March 10, 2004 at 15:51:58:I recently bought a larger-sized townhouse which has a beautiful mahogany-stained stair railing. I really love the richness of it and have no intention of painting it. However, a lot of my furniture is maple or birch. My kitchen and dining room, which is very open and viewable from the whole living room, have very light maple floors, a maple dining room table, and I will eventually be putting in new maple kitchen cabinets.
I really love the look of light wood in the kitchen and dining area and the rich classic look of the stairs. Is it a decorating “no no” to combine different wood finishes? Ideally, I would like to be able to keep the furniture I have as well as adding something darker to tie in the stairs, but am concerned that it will clash. Is there any way to make this work?
