You know, that's exactly how I've been doing it, tracing, rectangles, right down to your placement of the W x L mesurements inside each rectangle. Weird.
So I guess I must be pretty close.
I usualy draw a main floor and get that to what looks good an resonable. Then I trace the outline of the main floor using a light table I built. Then I use the outline as the starting point for the foundation drawing.

The reason I'm putzing again, after only a few years in the new place, is because the wife and I are thinking "smaller", too. Kids are gone, house to big now.
