I was recently informed by the British High Commission in Ottawa, Canada that I am not able to apply for the "right to abobe" because my English spouse is not a man. Obviously this raised a concern with my spouse of 10 years and she has asked me to enquire about this.
On the UK Visa Web site it is said:

How do I know if I am a Commonwealth citizen with the right of abode?
You will have the right of abode as a Commonwealth citizen if immediately prior 1 January 1983:* you were a Commonwealth citizen and married to a man with the right of abode *
While I find this wording to be entertaining, my wife has taken great insult by it and has asked me to enquire about it further. Is there any way that you can help me understand this policy better?
Thank you,
Christopher Ross
