Hello Tony,
If you've forgotten to give your blocks a "z" value, you can select the block and type in a "z" value in the Object Info box. But, it's best to give those blocks a height when you create them.
The object selection cycling you are experiencing is normal. We like to call it "clicking through" objects. The reason for this is that you are working in a 3D environment and, often as not, there will be an object in the way of the one you are trying to select. This can sometimes be difficult to tell when you're working in wireframe, however.
So when you click the first time, you'll get the closest object to your view. When you click the second time (leaving the mouse in the exact some place) you'll get the next closest object, and so on. Using this method, you can simply click through the intervening objects until you reach the one you want. You can also use the Hide command to hide certain objects that are getting in the way.
There is a DesignWorkshop tutorial that takes you step by step through the creation of a two-story house that may be helpful to you. Other than that, you can always email Artifice support and ask. We'd be happy to create a set of instructions to help you complete specific modeling tasks. Also, check the message board often for new messages, as well as old ones. You can often find a good modeling or rendering tip there.
Thanks,
