Tony,
You may not be getting a hold of the corner selection point. Put the cursor over the point and hit the space bar, then mouse down and move the point with the alt key ( I am Mac user-- I suppose you have the right command key).
If the crosshair is zeroed on the plane of the polygon it should work without the "space jump". Hope one of us has your answer. There are many things in DW that take getting used to if you are used to 2d drafting.
