I think the place for softening may be after the image is created. Perhaps in Photoshop or Painter. Maybe not squggle necessarily, but adding a filter that adds texture can help make a hardline less static. Also you can show less detail and realistic features that take time to include and stilll have a nice image.
I don't think this is cheating because some of the detail required to make a hardline drawing believable is not esssential to the design. It may not all be worked out. Hence in earlier stages a crayon or napkin sketch may be closer to the thinking of the architect ; ) a little fuzzy perhaps?
