If this is true, than I would reason that if you counted the # of key strokes to get the lighting you want (let's say 3 key hits) then you could go back to the "Preferences file", and modify, or create a new, light material that had a brightness value of (the one you used) - (3*.2). If this works, than you should be able to use that new light material for your model lights.
I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time...
