I think the PowerCADD--DW interface has improved a little from last year (when objects did not come across to scale). There are modifications that many would like to see still.
I'd like all importation from the PCADD side to always appear at the same orientation to the origin in both programs. then you can import element footprints as the project develops and they will always be in the correct location in relation to previously imported objects.
I think learning to use the interface as it is takes some other approaches. I found it easier to import shaped wood members for a trellis in a plane that shows the shaping, rather than import everything in plan. I then had to rotate the objects into the vertical after extruding.
If you look at the furniture models offered at Bytesyze Studios: "ModelPAK" you might find some answers to your questions. These models were done with extensive use of PowerCADD.
Seems hard to get great models etc without paying extra. There are companies offering 2d images that can be used in renderings as alpha channels and are very realistic, but they cost a lot.
