I know that one way to stabilize the mud is to add tarr (in spanish: asfalto/brea) to the mix. I do not know in which proportions. If my memory does not fail me the Incas (or some other pre-columbian american civilization) used it.
If you are looking for a cheap way to build why dont you try precast concrete blocks (if you can get cement in Salomon islands). I have seen in Urugay a fellow make his own block out of sheet metal molds.
