I think that many DO go directly to the computer. Those using PowerCADD have noted this repeatedly. DesignWorkshop is also a step in this direction. You may check with Jacque Pochoy, a professor in France who has given this a lot of thought.

Anything that will use the stylus imput would be interesting to look at. I imagine a computer aid that could help in refining repeatitive sketching. allowing the user to hardline as the idea develops,Though I don't know if going to directly from that to CAD is the answer.

In CAD i'd generally use rectangles as a bubble diagram, areas can be shuffled around for floor plans. Masses in DW can be stretched and moved. However a softer form with graphic aids might be helpful. (Symbol tools to mark traffic, mechanical, etc.). Good luck.
