It is a fine line between the loss of to much detail and fast download times. While the "Smart-Shopper" works with two windows open, allowing the "biggies" to load in the background, most people don't. Without citing study after study, lets just say people's attention span is limited - and their patiance on the net is even shorter.
The guidlines I suggeted are just that - a suggestion. I would agree that color banding does occur at to low a compression setting. It is kind of trail and error to find the best comprimise. I do disagree, however, about the pixel size. Many users, especially those in the wintel world, are using monitors with a resolution of 640 pixel wide. 700 pixels wide would then require the user to scroll back and forth which is a kind of internet faux-pax. Besides that image size grows at an expotential rate.
I don't mean to "throw a monkey in the works", I just thought a little more discussion might be benificial in getting an optimum procedure for creating an exciting and user friendly User Gallery.
Thanks
P.S. Gary, was that you who is the "Cal" alum. Let me say congratulations on the Cal victory over the "Ducks" in the NIT final four. Good luck in the final. Go Pac 10.
