It sounds like you need to settle on a software before you commit to doing this. Check out Autodesk inventor. That lets you create items and automatically creats a BOM, which would be of use to you. As far as typing in the dimension, I think you need to be able to create a 2D profile of a piece first...say a chair leg and then have the software extrude it to a certain length or width. I can't think of anything that just lets you type in dimensions and then a 3D object just appears. Personally, I use AutoCAD for creating furniture pieces, and that program (unless you have a background in drafting) can be a bit overwhelming. I know the last thing anyone wants to do is learn new software, but download a demo of Autodesk's products and give them a try. If you need any help with the furniture design, email me. I've been creating graphics in 2D and 3D for over 10 years and I'm currently working on some art&crafts style furniture plans for a client. I'd be happy to give you some help.
