I also find it helpful to explode any blocks, detach xrefs and re-insert as
blocks (and then explode), and purge the drawing prior to export. Keeping it
simple is definitely the rule, rather than the exception, when using the DXF
file format. Everything else you said is also very important when
exporting. Following simple guidelines makes for an easy and reliable file
transfer.
