If you're using software like 3DSMAX or VIZ. The alpha channel image would be loaded as an opacity map. Then the tree image would be loaded as a diffuse map. You need to actually have the alpha channel as a separate distinct image to use it as I have just said. If there is just the tree and the black background then you have to crop out the whole tree and then resave it as a different file. Mondo tedious.
