We are working on putting together more detailed information regarding light sources, and this should be available soon.
The trick of trimming objects to get the lights to shine on them better only appliues to the standrd Shading rendering style. Trimming has no affect on the Shadow Casting/LightWorks rendering style, because this renderer is pixel based, whereas the shading renderer is vertex based.
