ATI cards have a 16 bit Z buffer, while rendering in software has a 32 bit Z buffer. My understanding is the Z buffer determines what objects should draw in front of other objects in the current view. Because the ATI cards have a shallower Z buffer, they have more mistakes in determining what objects should be in front of others.
The latest version of DesignWorkshop, 1.7.5, drastically improves these problems with ATI cards, by carefully tuning settings to work as well as possible with ATI card. This version eliminates most of the striping and jaggies seen with earlier versions of DesignWorkshop when using ATI cards.
DesignWorkshop 1.7.5 is available as a free download to all registered owners of DesignWorkshop 1.7. For more information on getting this version contact Artifice technical support, by sending mail to support@artifice.com.
