Being beginner I've experienced the same kind of problems (along with zoom indication that are quite impossible -allmost in millions). The only workaround I know until now is to save my model, quit DW and start it again.
I guess you could also define a view to get you back in a proper zoom and eye setting...
Hmm... Are you sure you are not in axonometric view?
