If you have a Macintosh, you could try "Can Opener" (maybe it exist also for Windows?) you might have at least a "look" on what sort of image they are..; Otherwise, just trash them anyhow, if there valuable for someone, he should have tagged them properly on a school machine, otherwise, it's the trash bin. I may seem harsh but it's the only way I know to get students to learn "computer tydiness"... :)
