Hello David,
I am sorry to hear your first impression of DesignWorkshop was not a good one, but I am confident we can work with you to solve the problems you have encountered.
DesignWorkshop for Windows does support Windows bitmap (.bmp) files, along with .jpg, .gif, .tif and a few others. You can use these formats as textures or backgrounds, and also export these formats from DesignWorkshop.
DesignWorkshop can certainly import AutoCAD DXF files, the Pro Windows version even supports AutoCAD DWG files. To import a file use the File menu, Import > DXF Drawing or Model command, and select the file you want to import.
When a file is imported the 0,0 point of the drawing corresponds to the 0,0,0 point in DesignWorkshop. Most drawing software puts the 0,0 point in a corner of the drawing, whereas in DesignWorkshop the 0,0,0 point is in the center of the world. As a result the entire drawing may all be in one quadrant of the model space, and may be entirely off screen. After importing you can double click the Look Tool to set the center of focus in the center of all the stuff in your model.
If you are having problem with a particular DXF, or have any other questions, please follow up with Artifice Support directly, by sending email to support@artifice.com.

Mike Wheeler
