The current releases of DesignWorkshop Lite and DesignWorkshop Classic are a generation behind the latest available DesignWorkshop Professional version. There are some bugs in the version you're using now which are fixed in the available DW Pro. By the way, we expect to be bringing the Lite, Classic, and Professional releases into sync within the next month or so. The feature differences will stay the same, but all versions will get the benefit of the latest DesignWorkshop Professional code maintenance.
Something to keep in mind regarding "intermittent" tools is that some tools go on and off depending on the working situation. So some of the issues you see may just be part of the natural learning curve.
