DW IS a very "intuitive" program...for people who are not already "trained" on a modeler (whatever the soft). Most european people in need of a modeler, have (maybe) a peculiar background that slows up the understanding of DW. In fact, I've observed that higher the level of knowledge on "classical" modelling softs, harder the "breaking in" with DW...!
About examples files, you should get some great building examples (3DMF files) there are also very nice plugs-ins that gives you shadows and transparencies and even a "sketch" look...
