I don't konw about Eric Densin's response, but it sounds like Cristin knows one reason why this national treasure was designed and constructed. Obolisks were origionally symbolic of a frozen ray of sunlight honoring the Egyptian god of the sun. Perhapse this monument was constructed to allow later generations to look into a frozen moment in time and realize some of the impacts George Washington had on our country. He was definitely a tall figure in the course of our history, but the question for us to ponder while gazing at this monument is this: how far does his shadow really stretch?
