Hi:
You colud try with a program like lightwave3d, inspire3d(cheaper version of lightwave) or I think truespace 4, all these have bones for objects and morphing. Thent start with a box and tesselate it as far as you need and start animating.
I haven't tried to do anithing like that, but it could work.
