There are Plug-in programs that you can use for Max which allow you to make trees easily, one of them being Druid. As far as textures are concerned, you can make your own textures in photoshop and then assign them to the tree you make. The best thing I can tell you for trees would be the book "Inside 3D Studio Max 1" volume 2. THough it is meant for version 1 of max, the techniques given it for plants apply to most 3D software.
