Alternatively, if you want to make the spheroidal object manually, you can use the DesignWorkshop Lathe Machine. This can result in a finished object that appears just like the one Michael described, but is one object instead of a group of separate objects. This helps in terms of object manipulation, as well as keeping down the file size.
To do this, create a circular polyline in an elevation view. Then trace exactly half of the circle (using the Snap-To-Handles tool works great) leaving it as an open polyline. You probably don't want to use Snap-to-Handles on the top or bottom of the circle because those points will be between vertices. If you begin tracing from the top of the circle, double-click when you reach the bottom to end the polyline without closing it.
Now you can delete the full circle, leaving only the open half-circle. Save the file with only the half-circle. Then go to the Lathe Machine, select the file you just created, set the axis of rotation to the Z axis, set the number of facets desired, and make the object. The lathe machine will create a globe-like object and will save it to your local hard drive, as well as open the file in DesignWorkshop to show you what you created.
This is the newest, most efficient method of creating round, or globe-like special objects. Give it a shot and tell us what you think.
