Hello Simon,
DesignWorkshop Lite for Windows is able to save 3DMFs as either binary or ascii. Both types of files have the same file extension, 3dmf, which may be the cause of your confusion.
To confirm that you are saving as ASCII 3DMF save a simple model as ASCII 3DMF then rename the file so the file extension is txt and open it in a text viewing program. If most of the characters in the file are readable, it is an ASCII file. If the characters are seemingly random and unreadable it is a binary file.
ASCII 3DMFs are bigger and slower than binary 3DMFs, so most people will not have a need for them.
Thanks,
Mike Wheeler
