For design-oriented architectural 3D, try DesignWorkshop -- Lite version available free, Pro version just $495. The Pro version for Windows includes DWG file read/write capability.

Here's a real customer comment, received from last Wednesday (2000.1213) from Gary Bonato:

"I must say that this package is the most impressive software package I have used since I learned to use computers 16 years ago. I have used in my office FormZ, ACADR14, ACAD LT98, Animation Master and tooled with various other 3D packages."
