Dear John,

Thank you for contacting Artifice.

Your DesignWorkshop model is whatever you make it. If you make the roof as a large solid block, then it will be a large solid block. This is fine for representing a roof in many cases. When you want vaulted ceilings you should not model the roof as a single large solid block. You should model the roof as it would be in real life, a set of sloping slabs.

In Plan view use the Polyline Tool to draw the shape of one of the roof slabs. Then extrude it to whatever thickness you want for the roof itself, six inches or so. Now with the Faces Tools select the face of the slab where the fascia board and rain gutter would go then click and option drag this face down until you reach the desired slope.

For symettrical roofs you can then use the Edit menu Duplicate command and then the Arrange menu, Flip command to create the opposite roof slab. Then just drag it into position.

Repeat this procedure for the remaining roof slabs and you will have a nice roof with open space underneath it.

Please let us know whenever you have any other questions regarding DesignWorkshop.

Best wishes,

Mike Wheeler
