I do architectural renderings but still use Facade for starting my model before importing to 3DMax when appropriate. I have done whole projects in Autocad, modeling, rendering and all - I would suggest you go look at McNeel.com and follow the link to Facade and Accurender - another great plugin. Some of my work is up there along with tons of of other peoples who use this program exclusivley and have really mastered this program. There are quite a bit other programs available like DesignWorkshop which are also very good and all have thier strenghts and weaknesses so depending on what you need, want to spend, want the final rendering to look like and spend time training.
