You first need to go in to the Material editor, I use MAX so its a bit different but in essence, you'll see a bunch of colored spheres, one of the little icons surrounding them should be a "get new material" button, once the next screen pops up you should have a list or a bunch of little spheres that have "material" on them, double click on a name or a sphere and it should appear on a sphere in the firat screen. At this point you should be able to right click, and drag the material over to the object you want it to be on. you might have to move the material and zoom in a window so you can see the object. You can also select the objects and then in the material editor click the apply to selected objects button. You really should take the time to do the tutorials that are in you Vis books. They are excellent and absolutly do not go out and buy 3d party books untill you have done so.
After you get this down then you can start to make your own materials, using the default ones is easy but your renderings won't stand out from everyone eleses.
