3dmax3.1 continually hanging or just exiting.

Sys info: Win 2000, directx8.a, nvidia 6.5 drvrs, pIII, 512mgRam
Max has always been pretty buggy, but ever since I installed a demo version of 3dmax4 my real version 3.1 just keeps doing the nasty. Yes Ive unistalled all of them and tried reinstalling only 3.1 but still horrid. Can anyone help me, please? Are there any patches??
