I am currently using 3DMax in conjunction with another CGI-system called VIZrt.
In order to achieve an opacity effect in VIZ, I am using a *.rgb file format (I had not heard of it either), which (after having installed a plug-in in PS) could be exported from Photoshop.
Problem is, 3DMax doesn't recognize the rgb-format when it holds an alpha channel. No alpha --> no problem, but I need the alpha for the VIZ-system...
So what I need is basicly a patch, script og extended plug-in for Max that makes it manipulate rgb-files succesfully. Until now I have been working with two sets of images (one with alpha, one without), but this gets REALLY tiresome as your images build up.
