From 3ds model to game ???

I wouldn't even class myself as a begginner yet. Im interested in making 3d games in the future, and I was just wanting a rough idea of the process of creating a 3d program. Are there and free 3d graphics engins around? If so, could someone please direct me to a site where I can download them?
