I've used a variety of CAD programs, and if your firm is one that has many users on one project at a time, there's a CAD program called MicroGDS by Informatix that has a great multi-user format. I'd recomend that for larger projects. If you do more smaller projects, though, AutoCAD is probably a nice start. If you do a lot of 3D modeling, it would probably be worth your while to invest in FormZ or 3d Studio Max. The latter makes animations extremely easy, plus you can easily import AutoCAD files (I'm not sure about FormZ). I can't speak for anyone else, but I personally like modeling in ACAD and importing into 3DS Max. ACAD uses true solids, which I find makes for nicer booleans, etc.

Good luck with the search!
