There are many '3D for the web' applications, & that is one of the problems. The development of 3D for the web has been disjointed, eratic, & disappointing on a performance front for so long that a player such as macromedia putting its attention in that direction is nothing short of EXCITING to me.
The shockwave player plug-in has an installed user base of over 200 million people - much more than any other 3D content delivery method, & independant test reports say that it will deliver real time 3D content including texturing, shading, rendering etc, at 25fps!
You mention a scaled down Max as a player - in effect that's what the new SW8.5 has become.
If you don't want to learn lingo, use Web3D or VRML or one of those other frustratingly slow and poor performing formats that are lucky to hit 1fps.
Lingo is only a macro style language that is pretty simple to get used too - so give it a go, & if you get stuck, drop me an email & I'll help you with it.
