For making basic floor plans and plot maps with house placement, "professional" architectural drafting software like Autodesk Architectural Desktop and ArchiCAD is massive overkill. I don't think you want to spend several thousand dollars on one of those programs, or spend months to learn it.
For straightforward, usable 2D drawing and drafting software for Windows, look at PC Draft by Microspot, or something like IntelliCAD. For Macintosh, Mac Draft is a good option at a good price.
