Well, it could be a good start...
But if you have got seriouse intentions in 3D and, have enough cash then go for something more powerful!
I've got Cinema4D and I am completely satisfied with it.
On the e-bay or some forums you could find some good price for a Lightwave or Cinema4D or Electric Image Universe.
MAX is quite popular but after you get sick with it you cannot sell it! Yes, Discreet have a marvelous policy.
Try a demo of Realsoft3D (www.realsoft.fi). As a student you get a totally commercial release for some 350USD!
To recapitulate, it depends on how much money you are willing to spend and what do you need the program for.
