I don't think you are doing anything wrong and I don't know of "better" solutions per say, but as an engineer who has been doing 3D design and engineering for many years might I suggest trueSpace by Caligari and Vellum Solids or Cobalt by Ashlar. They work very well together for me. I have a wide variety of file formats to use between them if one gives me problems. I have found both very easy to learn and use. trueSpace has excellent animation capbilities compared to CAD programs. (I'm not comparing it to other more expensive 3D animation packages)
As for AutoCAD, I was trained on it. About 7 years ago I came across Vellum Solids and when I was able to create the same things in about 1/20 the time I never went back. Of course I can still work with AutoCAD files as needed.
I have never regretted the decision.
