Wheel Files in PCB CAD Programs?

Can anyone please tell me what exactly are Wheel Files in PCB programs such as Protel or Eagle Cad. Where can I get more info? What are they? What are common settings for normal pcb production. Any help would be very helpful. Thankyou.
