Over the last few weeks I have had a constant problem with PowerCadd just freezing on me with the dreaded spinning beach ball.
It doesn't seem to follow any pattern - I could be using text or zooming or using any other tool. It also doesn't follow any time scale, sometimes happening within a few minutes of a previous one & sometimes with a couple of hours between. However it usually happens at least 2 / 3 times a day with the only option being a restart & subsequent loss of anything from the last save. Because it doesn't actually crash there is no crash log to send to ENGSW. I wrote to them a couple of weeks ago explaining my situation but they haven't replied.
I have repaired permissions & trashed the p.list but this hasn't helped.
I have not installed any other programs & this doesn't happen in any other program.
Any help would be much appreciated as I am beginning to tear out what little hair I have left.

| This has been happening to me when using a laptop where I have no internet access-it seems that Pcadd may be trying to access the network and finding no connection freezes up-after a while it returns to normal, never happens when on my office network. Try checking your network set up to see if you have any connection disconnects. Otherwise, I see you are on a G5, perhaps that machine is becoming problematic (particularly if it is liquid cooled). |

Network causes troubles. You should try to
1 - unplug the ethernet wire (or stop the wifi)
2 - open PC7
3 - plug the ethernet network.
For me it's makes effect. I have never understood why it runs this way, but it's like that. Really annoying... |

Thanks for the info.
I have tried your solution and so far everything is okay.
So with fingers crossed I start a new day.
Thanks again

| In an office of 4 1/2, all using PC7 WT8 on G5 Powermacs on Leopard, this is happening 2-3 times per day. I certainly appreciate everyone sharing this information about unplugging the network cables, but does anyone expect ES to address this issue? It is certainly frustrating to have software that costs so much lost time/productivity. |

The problem might be fixed with the free update to PCD7, you don't specify which specific version you're using, simply PCD7
At www.engsw.com , front page, there's a clear statement about which versions of PowerCADD are recommended for what systems. It's worth the read, here's a snippet from their front page:
Apple's latest Operating Systems make the 7.0.6 update Mandatory.
PowerCADD 7.0.6 Changes...
PowerCADD 7.0.6 update is available free and considered mandatory. The preferred Operating System for 7.0.6 is 10.4.11. All versions of 6.x and versions of 7.0.5 and under are not compatible and should not be used with System 10.5.x and above. Approximately thirty System revisions have been released since the design of PowerCADD 7. ....
PowerCADD v8 is available and is considered the recommended version for OS 10.5.x. That may be the fix to your problem in the long run, it's impossible to tell from the information posted and without actually being on the specific network. |

My version of PowerCadd is 7.0.6 & unfortunately until I can buy an Intel computer I can't convert to PowerCadd 8.
I really hoped that doing the Network thing would work but unfortunately it hasn't.
What I really can't understand is why this has just started after many years of using PowerCadd.
It looks as though I can now only hope that Santa brings me a new computer for Christmas!!

If you're using DHCP try increasing duration of the lease or use static IP's instead. That reduces the amount of network polling which could easily be your problem. |

I had the same problem not long ago when I tried to make a local printer available to the network. The printer was a HP 1200C attached directly to a G5. For some reason PC was obsessed with keeping in touch with this printer and would often put up the spinning wheel.
Have you done anything new with your printers?

I vaguely remember something like this happening a long time ago and can't remember how I dealt with it. (I am on PC8.) I did just look into my PC7 application folder and found an folder called Disabled Update Check. I can't remember how this got here, but if you control click on the PowerCADD 7 application and "show contents", you can find an item called Update Check in the Plug-Ins>Menus folder, which looks quite similar to my disabled item. You might dig around in this discussion group's archives to see if there is something about moving this Update Check folder out of PowerCADD 7's contents. (I don't want to tell you what to do for fear of really screwing something up.)
