Subject: NLC Eugene Celebration Booth
Greetings Neighborhood Leaders.
I wanted to take a few minutes to update you on the Neighborhood booth for
the Eugene Celebration.
We will be in the Community Causeway (over by the back entrance of Full
City/Palace Bakery) of the Eugene Celebration on Saturday, September 13 from
11-7 and Sunday, September 14 from 11-5. This year's theme for the
Celebration is 'I Dream of Eugenie.'
Since there are all new people working on the booth this year, it has a
"new" flavor to it. That flavor will likely be vanilla or banana or both or
neither. Since I've been deputized to bring this together, you get 'I Dream
of Eugenie' melded with 'Happy Birthday Neighborhood Associations' into
something like "Ice Creamy Dreamy Banana Split." We plan to draw people to
our booth by giving away ice cream. If we can't get the logistics right on
ice cream, we will still give away something delicious (Maybe cupcakes.
Probably bananas for all the monkeys out there.).
Once we've attracted people to our booth with a sweet ploy, they will be
pinned to a map, and we will have the most beautiful neighbor collection in
the world! Sorry, bad joke. We would like to get some information from
people before rewarding them with a sweet. We would like them to pin their
location on a map; we would like to know what they like about their
neighborhood; and we would like to capture their contact info to help boost
involvement in the Associations. See, ice cream is a magic wand. Bing!
When they've jumped through our various hoops, then they get to play another
appetizing & interactive game. They get their ice cream or plain banana or
cupcake, and then they get to add a variety of toppings that represent
Neighborhood Association activities or outcomes, such as social capital,
sustainability, land use planning, etc. Voila, Dreamy Banana Split chock
full o Sustainability Sprinkles and Social Capital Nuts!
The booth will also have info about Neighborhood Matching Grants and
possibly some other infos. We will have the neighborhood "business cards"
there as well, but they will be undergoing some transformation.
Speaking of transformation, this year's booth is a transition project. We
know that there's been a booth in the past, so we are drawing on the
precedent of participating, but the content of the booth is leaning toward
"new." What it is going to be is neither what it has been nor what it will
become. In that respect, it might be a bit of a platypus. It would be
great if we can get something useful out of the Neighborhood booth so hope
that we can give folks enough "take home" experience to encourage their
participation in NAs. In addition to a sweet, we would also like to send
them home with something a little more lasting -- a reminder and contact
info. Enter NA "business cards." These are a great opportunity for us to
market the neighborhood associations in a new way, and I would like to start
emphasizing the graphic read we can give neighborhoods. Some of us read
English, some Spanish, some kidspeak, some Japanese, etc....all of us read
image. It's time for picture motto...or logo. I encourage you all to start
thinking of your neighborhoods in this way or to continue if this is already
part of how you interpret your NA experience.
Additional emails will be forthcoming on how you can help with the booth
this year.
Thank you for all you do in contributing to neighborhood flavor and
toppings!
Heidi
